Happy Holidays

Happy Holidays

Happy Holidays The Holiday Season is a very special time of the year.  Too often we get caught up in the craziness of it all though. Running from Holiday party to Holiday party, fighting the crowds in the stores, putting up the tree, baking cookies, wrapping the presents. Remember to pause every once in a while and remember what it is all about like it. Often, we get caught up in the details and focusing on making everything perfect. But it’s the imperfections that make for the best memories. Remember the time the turkey caught on fire and your whole family went to McDonald’s for their Christmas meal? Those are the stories that will be told during the Holidays 20 years from now, make people laugh and fill the hearts of old and young with joy. So I wish all my readers, clients and friends Happy Holidays and many new and wonderful memories that will warm your heart with joy for years to come!...

Julie’s Blog: About Tribes and Purple Cows

Julie’s Blog: About Tribes and Purple Cows

Seth Godin’s Idea of Tribes and Purple Cows Hi all, I have had the pleasure of listening to Seth Godin’s seminar of how to build tribes and purple cows. So when most people think of a tribe you think of the American Indians right? The guys with tomahawks jumping around a camp fire howling and chanting like in the old western movies. Well that’s what I thought of. However that’s not what Seth Godin means. He brings the meaning of tribes to the 21 century, and incorporates it with our daily lives and how businesses work. Basically a tribe is a group of people that share a common interest or belief, with one leader. He uses an example of the purple cow to explain his concept better. A purple cow is something, that sets your business apart from your competitors and gets people to talk about your business, something that draws people in. “Ideas that spread win.” If people are talking about your business, sharing their experience with other potential customers your business wins. Think outside the box. Like the furniture store that has a roller coaster and the biggest TV screen in town. Another example that Seth talks about is a sock company called LittleMissMatched. LittleMissMatched is a sock company for young girls, they make socks that don’t match. The socks are for girls that wear clothes that don’t match. When the young girl is sitting at lunch or in class and has nothing to talk about, she can say to another girl: “Wanna see my socks?” All the girls that wear LittleMissMatched socks have something in common, they share a bond that others do not. Sharing a common interest with missed match socks makes the young girls a tribe. For a business to gain a tribe they need something that is out of the ordinary, a purple cow. People will start talking and spreading your business idea to one another. There are too many average things to choose from in this generation. Consumers have millions of different locations to choose from, convince is not a good enough marketing campaign anymore. For a new business to be successful you must create a purple cow to draw in tribe members and keep them coming back. Seth Godin: How to be remarkable – Tribes and Purple Cows So, what is your tribe? Do you have a purple cow? Share with us in the comments! Image Source: Some of rebecca’s...

Jupiter Labs sponsors San Antonio Girl Geek Dinners

Exciting News: Jupiter Labs is the new Sponsor for the San Antonio Girl Geek Dinner Meetup I actually have two announcements that are pretty awesome! First, I am excited to announce our partnership with the San Antonio chapter of Girl Geek Dinners and I am happy to support such a great organization. And second, I was chosen to take over the organization of this group as well, which means I will be able to support this amazing group in multiple ways. But let me tell you a bit more about Girl Geek Dinners and why it is so exciting for me and my company to get involved with this group: What is Girl Geek Dinners? Girl Geek Dinners was started back in 2005 by Sarah Lamb, a software engineer from the UK. In most of her teams that she worked on, she was the only woman. Being a hands-on woman, she figured that there must be other women out there dealing with the same hurdles than herself. She decided to set up a Meetup, so these women could connect, build friendships and help each other to establish themselves in professions where women were and still are a minority. While men are not excluded from Girl Geek Dinner events, every woman can only bring one man to the events, to ensure women represent at least 50% (usually more though) of the group. Girl Geek Dinners became a success right away and spread to cities world wide to connect women working in technology, science, engineering and other predominantly male professions. The main mission of the Girl Geek Dinners is to connect amazing women who share an interest in technology and science, so they can build a network of like-minded friends, supporters and mentors. And in April of 2013 it finally happened… San Antonio Girl Geek Dinners On April 4, 2013 the San Antonio Girl Geek Dinners had their first event. Veronica Morales, who has been a Gadget and Technology lover all her life, took on the role as organizer and together with Laura Mesia, they started to develop a great community of amazing women from San Antonio. After just 10 meetups and within less than a year, they have grown to a group with over 80 new members and San Antonio Girl Geek Dinner Meetups has become a thriving Meetup community with regular events every first Thursday of each month. Veronica and Laura organized visits at Geekdom and the Microsoft store, dinners and craft parties for the San Antonio Girl Geek Dinner women to connect and get to know each other. Thank you Veronica and Laura for all your hard work and bringing Girl Geek Dinners to San Antonio. The Next Chapter Last Saturday, I was approached by Veronica and Laura and asked if I wanted to take over as organizer of the San Antonio Girl Geek Dinner meetup and whether my company Jupiter Labs would be willing to sponsor the Meetup Group to offset the Meetup.com fees. I feel very honored to have been chosen by these two great ladies. I know I have some big shoes to fill, but I am very excited to take on this role and I hope to continue to grow this community and enable these amazing and inspiring women to connect, share their stories and help each other grow. I am very passionate about women making their dreams come true and not limiting themselves or letting others limit them to predefined gender roles. Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and all these other topics are fascinating and are changing the world we live in. We need...
